My name is Emily Brooks, I am currently 22 years old, and I live in Beaver Dam, WI.
I first started designing when I was 14 and had just started high school. I took graphic design classes all throughout high school, learning how to use software, like Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as the basics in graphic design production, like screen printing and vinyl printing/cutting. I had the opportunity to learn how to apply the designs I made on the computer to different physical objects, like etching on the mirror, or creating notepads using a guillotine cutter, or using the printing press to create multiple copies of the same designs on plates. I then moved on to taking mainly design courses when I moved on to college. I knew I wanted to know more about graphic design and push myself creatively, so I decided to go to a tech school to specialize in my graphic design knowledge while also staying on a budget. There, I learned more about different software, including InDesign and Premiere Pro. I learned how to design through video and organization on book pages. I learned more about image editing, and about designing for the web. In my graphic design course, I also had to take some web design/coding classes that taught me more about the idea of web design.
I first learned how to code in high school, but unlike design, I started coding when I was 17, my senior year of high school. I learned the basics of HTML and CSS when I took that class, and knew how to make a website, but that was the extent of what I knew. I later learned more about coding when I went to school for graphic design, which opened up more opportunities to explore coding and designing for the web. I decided to then expand my knowledge on design and my skills in that area and go to school for web design. During my time learning about coding and web design, I have been able to pick up skills and learn more about coding than I ever thought I would be able to. I have learned how to use multiple HTML and CSS properties, including creating animations, as well as picking up the basics of JavaScript and Python. I have also learned more about what goes into the process of creating a website for clients, like creating mockups with color samples and creative briefs. I have even learned about how to write professional business documents and what all goes into the beginning process of creating a site. I know how to make websites responsive, how to create interactive elements on a site, and along the way I have had to teach myself how to do certain things, picking up as I go.
When I am not learning or doing work, I like to spend my time still creating, but in different ways. I like to paint and draw, and spend a lot of time on my tablet putting together my creative ideas. I like doing my makeup and expressing myself creatively through putting together artsy looks. I often like to unwind after a stressful day by doing those things, or even playing video games, of which I have many. I like to be engaged in whatever I do and always like picking up new hobbies and skills, and want to take up sewing for that very reason. I have so many interests and creative ideas and love to explore different outlets to funnel that energy into.
